Revenue Cycle Management is the process of tracking the revenue from patients, from their first encounter with the healthcare system to the final payment of their balance. The Revenue Cycle Management Training consists of three 8 week long courses exploring each level of the Revenue Cycle – the front-end process of patient access and revenue preparation; the middle process of claims preparation; and the back-end process of ensuring optimal revenue.

Q: Who is eligible?

A: The eligible student population are CT residents 18 years or older who are either unemployed or underemployed. This grant is particularly focused on CT residents who have been disproportionately impacted by Covid, including those who lost their jobs in the health care, retail and service industries and BIPOC, women, veterans and people with disabilities.

Q: How much does the training cost?

A: This program is 100% free to all participants, funded by a grant from the State of Connecticut, Office of Workforce Strategy.*

Q: How long does the program take?

A: This program is split into three, 8-week long courses. Participants can choose to complete 1, 2 or all 3 levels based on how far they would like to go in the HIM career field. If someone chooses to just take Level 1 they will be finished in 8 weeks.

Q: Who is Charter Oak State College?

A: Charter Oak State College is Connecticut’s only public, fully online college. It is regionally accredited and part of the Connecticut State College and University system.

Q: What is the class schedule?

A: The classes are each 8 weeks long, but they are asynchronous, meaning that there isn’t a set time to be online each day or to be online at the same time as others in the class. The courses are instructor led and students will have a course syllabus with assignments due each week. These are not self-paced courses.

Q: Are the classes in person or virtual?

A: The classes are 100% online but not live in a virtual setting. Students can do their work each week when it is convenient for them.

Q: Can students take the classes while working?

A: Yes, students can complete their online course work outside of work hours.

Q: Can students take the classes on a phone?

A: All students will be given free laptops from Charter Oak State College for the purpose of taking these courses. The courses are not mobile-friendly and need to be taken on a computer.

Q: When do students receive the stipend? How much is the stipend?

A: Students receive a stipend of approximately $2,000 after completing each level of training.

Q: What kind of support will students have during the courses?

A: Our Academic and Career Navigator will help students with enrollment, on-boarding, course navigation and provide career counseling. In addition, students will have access to mentors from the field of Health Information Management and Revenue Cycle.

Q: What kind of careers can students get into with this training?

A: This program will give students the skills and education needed to enter a career in Revenue Cycle Management or Health Information Management. These positions are typically found in hospitals, physician offices, urgent care centers or are remote.

Q: Does Charter Oak State College have other courses in this field?

A: Yes, Charter Oak State College has credit bearing certificates in HIM Fundamentals, Medical Coding, Clinical Documentation Improvement and others. The college offers a BS degree in Health Information Management and an MS degree in Health informatics. These courses and degrees are the next steps in the pathway after this training.
